World Heritage: The wooden churches of Maramures

Budesti ChurchNarrow. With massive roofs. With slim and very tall towers at the West side of the church. The tallest: 72m!!!!!!!!!
They are the Maramures Wooden Churches, first class UNESCO world heritage sites.

Their names are the names of the villages of which they belong to, and it's curious thing that UNESCO is listing just 8 (eight) churches. That's because there are no more no less than 42 historical wooden churches in Maramures. All being built in the same period (17th and 18th centuries) in which Romanians of Maramures, stripped of political rights, were also denied the right to build in stone.

So they built on oak. And they used wooden nails, and they raised their churches to be as toll as those of the people who denied them the right to use stone and bricks.

Their creations are influenced by both Orthodox and Gothic styles, the small and dark interior being conceived to induce the sentiment that the church is smaller than in reality.

Go there and feel the life that these wooden churches spread and enjoy a landscape scattered with slim and tall bell towers.
