Sighisoara is more than a medieval theme park. It's a citadel. It's intact. It's very old and it's inhabited. In Eastern Europe is unique.
Indeed, Sighisoara can be considered the most beautiful and well preserved citadel of Europe.
The citadel was built by Saxons in the 12th Century to become a strategic town and a city of royals. It had as many as 15 Guilds and 20 handicraft branches,
and was so important that Vlad Dracul, the father of Vlad the Impaler (better known in the popular culture as Dracula) made coins in the city, defying the monopoly in coinage of Hungarian Kings.
Did I just say "Dracula"? Yes! His birthplace is there, few steps from the Clock Tower. You have to be there on a Full Moon night, just for the sightseeing! But don't even try to tell horror stories to your friends because it's not funny!
So, what else is there to see? Well, it's the Clock Tower, which has a still functioning mechanism, and it's 60 m tall. For 1360, the year it was built it was a skyscraper no doubt. The view from the top it's amazing, so try to climb it. Fortunately this is possible and it's included in the museum ticket because nowadays the Clock Tower is hosting a must see medieval collection.
There's another museum, too, the Weapon Museum. Don't enter if you have a vivid imagination because you'll go graphic. Try maybe the Covered Staircase which leads to the church on the hill. It was built to help students reach their school on rainy and snowy days, but you'll find it lovely in any kind of weather.
On the top of the hill there is the church. It has a graveyard, too, so it's spooky in moonlight, but quite a welcoming place in the mornings.
Why to go?
Because it is an inhabited medieval town.
Because it is a World Heritage site.
When to go?
You can visit Sighisoara any time of the year. It is recommended to avoid going there in june because usually there are many construction sites preparing for te medieval festivalt in July. And yes, July is recommended (in 2009 the festival was held between 24 and 26 July).
