Constantin Brancusi monuments - Now or never!

It’s now or never: See the Brancusi’ sculptures before it’s too late!

Spooky! The “Endless column” was about to meet its end. Think about this when you’ll visit the setting of the column, the “Kissing gate” and the “Silent Table” in Targu Jiu, all three masterpieces signed by the famous Brancusi.

When the Romanian sculptor, one of the most influential in the world, inaugurated in 1937 his monumental oeuvres, he thought they would last for eternity. But he couldn’t foresee the fact that “eternity” might be very short in Romania. “Let’s make some money” thought some Romanian officials and they decided to dismantle the three sculptures, wash the bird poop, shave the lichens and put everything back together after sucking millions of dollars from the culture funds.

And they did it! With the HAMMER!!! The “Endless column” was cracked open and it’s central pillar stood for more than 3 years in open air, to rust. The thing is that they couldn’t put back together the 29,35m tall and 29 tons heavy masterpiece. And they wanted to replace it with a COPY!

Lucky us, citizens of the world, Romanian officials are not alone on this Planet. UNESCO stepped in and the column was finally restored. So, it’s time for you to rush and see it before some other idiot decides to give it again some money making "uplift”. And think of it not as something “eternal” but as something as fragile as the corals off the Australian Great White Reef.

When to go

The Park is open 365 days/year. On weekends and New Year locals are wedding under the “kissing gate”, a great opportunity for you to get free drinks and kiss the bride.

How to go

By car: Drive to Targu Jiu. See our maps for guidelines.

By air: Find here the closest airport.

By train: See the trains schedule here.

Why not to go

You saw the endangered corals off Australia and the “Endless Column” on TV and you are not much of a "see the real thing" person.

Where to stay?

Recommended: Think of Targu Jiu as one stop of a longer trip. If you think of it as a final destination for your day trip or plan to stay more than just one day you can find a hotel here.
