How to order?
Today is the day you decided not to enter a fast food, a self service eatery or an Italian restaurant and entered in a Romanian one for a change.
Questions are: what to eat? How to order?
Our first advice is: RELAX. Take the menu and open it to the first section. Usually it stars with GUSTARI, which are the Romanian equivalent for the Italian antipasto. Romanians usually eat olives, cheese and salads containing mayonnaise for gustari. Do not order cheese for desert, or salads to start with!
After you chose a plate from Gustari, go on the SUPE SI CIORBE (soupes) and choose one. It will come with bread and a hot pepper. Sometimes it will come with onion slices that you have to dip in salt and eat with the soup. Chose from the main categories:
a) Legume (vegetable)
b) Pui (chicken)
c) Porc (pork)
d) Vacuta (beef)
Next thing you have to order is from PREPARATE CALDE (hot meal, or main dish). Here you can choose from the same main categories:
a) Legume (vegetable)
b) Pui (chicken)
c) Porc (pork)
d) Vacuta (beef)
e) Peste (fish)
Ask your waiter which salad or which pickle goes with your choice and order it. Eat it in the same time with the main dish. Now, while choosing the main it’s also time for you to select the wine. Listen to the waiter's recommendation. Wine is usually good and cheap in Romania and, of course, one bottle is always asking for another.
But do not start with wine! First glass has to be one of TUICA or PALINCA or HORINCA, all three being Romanian brandy. Last, order a DESERT and a wine that goes with it. Romania is the kingdom of desert wines sou you should have plenty of chioces.
Pofta buna!
