Sunset in Vama Veche

Vama Veche - The ultimate agora

Total freedom!!! Tents on the beach, open fires into the night and cold guitar. That’s what Vama Veche means, that’s what is waiting for you there. And this is worth mentioning: lots of swimming-wear-hating people. If you think it’s a nudist camp you are wrong. That’s because a camp has rules and Vama Veche has none. And by the way, people don’t go there just because they can sunbath naked but because they can feel free. Think about this: Vama Veche was the only place in the communist Romania where people could gather and discuss without fear of being overheard and reported to the police.

So, if you are heading for Vama Veche here’s some tips for you:

1. Do not play hip hop music from your car speakers or stereo: you ain’t gonna make new friends.

2. Do not bring with you cheap literature: the girl next to you is reading Tolstoi and Alex Rider wont cheer her up

3. If you play the guitar practice some oldies before going there. You’ll be looked at as a guru.

4. Never discuss Hollywood movies with strangers! For a quick grab a Kubrick movie is perfect.

5. Say openly that you hate the “manele” (Turkish influenced gypsy music) and you’ll get free drinks (no kidding).
