Romania has a high non-viloent crime rate and an extremely low violent-crime rate. In other words you have plenty of reasons to fear for your wallet but not for your life. If you are cautious enough and keep your wallet in a safe pocket where you can always see it in any crowded situation, you should consider yourself as beeing in one of the safest countries in the world.

Theft in Romania

Romanians have an interesting culture about theft which may be quite shocking for the newly arrived. If you happen to get robbed or your wallet is missing you will find plenty of idiots telling you "this is what happens if you don't pay attention" in a tone which clearly makes it your fault, not the robber's. The robber is many times considerred "smecher" (which is a kind of smart but with a negative conotation) because he "worked you" with such skill that you didn't even notice. So as we told you before, watch your wallet and you'll be OK in Romania. Comparring to other countries, Romanian "criminals" will pick your pocket with more skill than you saying "hello" but they will not hit you in the head for your money.

Other safety issues

While being almost a violent-crime free country Romania still has its dangers. Irresponsible idiotic arrogant drivers posessing expensive cars cause more deaths on the roads than in any other European country while stray dogs in Bucharest might bite you to death if you are unlucky enought to end up between their teeth (this actually happened a few years ago: a Japanese business man in Bucharest was bitten by a stray dog and died. However, no other similar cases have been reported and the number of stray dogs shrunk significantly since Romania joined EU).
