Money

The currency in Romania is LEU (the plural is LEI). The Leu is divided in 100 BANI. The Leu notes are available in denominations of 1, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 while the coins are for Bani (5, 10 and 50).

The exchange rates are varying and you can check the current ones with the exchange rate tool available on the left column of each page of this web site.

Currency can be exchanged at banks, hotels, exchange offices (Casa de schimb valutar) but it is strongly recommended to avoid exchange offices in airports or main train stations known for their incredibly bad rates. If you come to Romania by air just exchange in the airport the minimum you need for the taxi or bus ride and exchange the rest when you get to a bank.
